Acreo has been commissioned to participate in an investigation concerning the development of next generation broadband networks, OASE - Optical Access Seamless Evolution, which is part of the EU research programme for the communication networks of the future.
Together with other researchers from various parts of the EU Acreo will be analysing the requirements necessary for the creation on NG-OA, Next Generation Optical Access – a project within the Seventh Framework Programme, the ICT-programme ”The Network of the Future”.
The aim of the programme is to investigate different technical solutions in combination with business models, policy, and rules and regulations. The need of different forms for co-operation between telecom industry and society is also subject of the investigation.
OASE will be studying present and future demands for NG-OA from economic, business operational and regulatory points of view.
Focuses of the project include:
- Open network. Interface, clear definitions and fields of responsibility
- Technologies for the interconnection of NG-OA between different network owners
- Network consolidation in optical networks and open networks
- Increased bandwidth, combined with high numbers of users and long distances
- A European solution allowing migration from FTTH/B to NG-OA.
The OASE project is to be pursued by a consortium of researchers from various European universities and companies. Acreo’s assignment is the analysis of different scenarios. The OASE project is partly financed by the EU commission.
- It is with great pleasure that we participate in the OASE, says Anders Berntson, department manager at Acreo. Sweden’s position within the broadband area is well known, and we regard this assignment as an acknowledgement of Acreo’s competence in the field.
More specifically, Acreo’s focus in the project shall be new network architectures and control-plane issues and their significance for the development of new business models.
